What is the DELE?

The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is the official Spanish language proficiency certification issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. DELE diplomas are lifetime certifications that never expire, and are recognised in over 100 countries for academic, professional, and immigration purposes.

DELE B2 certifies upper-intermediate Spanish, corresponding to CEFR level B2. At this level, candidates can understand complex texts on concrete and abstract topics, communicate fluently and spontaneously with native speakers, and produce clear and detailed texts on a wide variety of subjects.

Key fact: Unlike the SIELE (a scored, renewable certificate), DELE diplomas are permanent and level-specific. DELE B2 is one of the most widely requested levels for university admission and Spanish nationality applications.

Who Needs DELE B2?

  • Spanish nationality applicants: DELE B2 is one of the accepted Spanish language certificates required by the Spanish government for nationality applications.
  • University applicants: Spanish universities and many Latin American institutions require DELE B2 from non-native students applying for undergraduate programmes.
  • Professionals: Employers in Spain, Latin America, and internationally recognise DELE B2 as proof of working-level Spanish.
  • Secondary school students: DELE is offered as an extracurricular qualification in many secondary schools worldwide.
  • Work visa applicants: Required or accepted for certain Spanish and Latin American work and residency visa applications.
DELE vs SIELE vs CCSE: DELE is a permanent diploma by level. SIELE is a renewable scored certificate (similar to TOEFL). CCSE (Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales) is a separate citizenship knowledge exam. For language proficiency, DELE B2 is the most recognised.

Exam Format & Timing

DELE B2 is divided into two independent groups. Both groups must be passed to receive the diploma.

SkillDurationQuestions/TasksGroup
Reading Comprehension70 min36 questionsComprehension
Listening Comprehension40 min30 questionsComprehension
Written Expression80 min2 writing tasksExpression
Oral Expression~20 min (+15 prep)3 tasksExpression

Total exam time: approximately 3 hours 50 minutes plus Speaking preparation. Reading and Listening are administered together; Writing and Speaking are administered separately or on a different day.

Scoring System

DELE B2 uses a group-based pass/fail system. The two groups are scored independently:

  • Group 1 — Comprehension: Reading + Listening. Maximum 100 points combined. Pass threshold: 60 points (60%).
  • Group 2 — Expression: Writing + Speaking. Maximum 100 points combined. Pass threshold: 60 points (60%).
Important: You must score at least 60% in BOTH groups to pass. A high score in Comprehension does not compensate for a low score in Expression. Candidates who fail one group receive an Apto Parcial certificate and may retake only the failed group within 24 months.

The DELE diploma does not display a percentage score. It simply certifies competency at B2 level.

Reading Comprehension

The Reading section contains four texts of increasing complexity, drawn from authentic Spanish sources: newspaper articles, literary texts, formal correspondence, and informational documents. Texts reflect the variety of Spanish used across Spain and Latin America.

Task types

  • Multiple-choice questions (3 options) on explicit information
  • True/False/Not mentioned tasks requiring textual justification
  • Matching tasks (e.g., matching sentences to paragraphs)
  • Cloze passages testing lexical and grammatical knowledge in context

Preparation strategies

  • Read El País, El Mundo, and BBC Mundo daily. Focus on editorials and cultural features.
  • Practice identifying the main idea, supporting arguments, and author's tone in each paragraph.
  • Build vocabulary in social, political, economic, scientific, and cultural domains.
  • Work through DELE B2 past papers to familiarise yourself with task types and text complexity.

Listening Comprehension

Four audio clips are played, covering a range of spoken Spanish contexts: radio programmes, interviews, conversations, and monologues. Speakers represent varied accents from Spain and Latin America. Most recordings are played twice.

Task types

  • Multiple-choice comprehension questions
  • Matching speakers to statements
  • True/False comprehension tasks
  • Gap-fill tasks completing a text with information from the recording

Preparation strategies

  • Listen to Radio Nacional de España, RTVE podcasts, and Latin American news radio regularly.
  • Expose yourself to multiple Spanish accents — Mexican, Argentine, Castilian, and Caribbean.
  • Practice focused listening: identify main ideas on the first listening, details on the second.
  • Work with authentic conversational Spanish, not just textbook recordings.

Written Expression

Two writing tasks are required in 80 minutes. Task 1 is typically a formal text (letter, email, report, or article) requiring a specific format and register. Task 2 is an opinion or argumentative text responding to a prompt on a contemporary issue.

Assessment criteria

  • Completion of the communicative task and appropriateness of register
  • Coherence and cohesion of the text
  • Richness and precision of vocabulary
  • Grammatical accuracy and range of structures

Preparation strategies

  • Learn conventions for Spanish formal letters (Estimado/a Sr./Sra., Me dirijo a usted con el fin de...).
  • Build a repertoire of discourse markers: sin embargo, no obstante, por otro lado, en definitiva, cabe destacar.
  • Practice writing 180–250 word tasks within 35–40 minutes to build exam pace.
  • Vary sentence structure: use subordinate clauses, conditionals, and the subjunctive.

Oral Expression

The Speaking test has three tasks, preceded by 15 minutes of preparation time with the documents. The oral examination itself lasts approximately 20 minutes.

Task structure

  • Task 1 — Valuation (6–7 min): Discuss a scenario (e.g., a problem to solve, a decision to make) based on a written prompt. Present your analysis and recommendations.
  • Task 2 — Image description (4–5 min): Describe and interpret a photograph or image, making inferences and relating it to broader social themes.
  • Task 3 — Opinion text (6–7 min): React to a short opinion text and discuss it with the examiner. Defend and develop your viewpoint.

Preparation strategies

  • Practice speaking on social topics for 5–7 minutes without stopping — build fluency stamina.
  • Learn to describe images precisely and make reasoned inferences about context.
  • Practice structured arguments: present position → give reasons → acknowledge counterarguments → conclude.
  • Record yourself and listen back to identify hesitation patterns, repetition, and pronunciation issues.

How to Prepare for DELE B2

Timeline recommendations

At solid B1 level: allow 4–6 months. Already at B2: 6–8 weeks of focused exam practice typically suffices.

Daily study habits

  • Read 20 minutes of quality Spanish content: Newspapers, essays, short stories. Annotate unfamiliar vocabulary.
  • Listen 20–30 minutes to native Spanish audio: News, documentaries, podcasts. Vary accents.
  • Write one structured text per week: Alternate between formal letters and opinion essays. Seek feedback.
  • Speak Spanish for 20+ minutes daily: Language exchange, tutor, or practice debates aloud on social topics.

Official resources

  • Instituto Cervantes publishes free sample exams and preparation materials at dele.es.
  • Edelsa and Anaya publish widely used DELE B2 preparation books with full practice exams.

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring the Expression group: Many candidates are strong readers but weak writers or speakers. Both groups must pass independently.
  • Mixing registers: DELE B2 writing tasks require formal Spanish. Avoid informal language, colloquialisms, and Anglicisms.
  • Too-short writing responses: Aim for the minimum word count. Very short responses receive lower scores even if grammatically correct.
  • Latin American vs Castilian Spanish: Both are accepted. Use one consistently and do not mix vosotros/ustedes forms in the same text.
  • Passive listening during audio: Preview the questions before each recording. Use the first listening for overall comprehension, the second for answers.
  • Speaking memorised monologues: Examiners can detect prepared speeches. Aim for natural, responsive conversation rather than reciting prepared text.

Sample Topics & Question Types

Reading topics

  • Sustainable development and environmental challenges
  • Digital transformation and its social effects
  • Health and lifestyle in contemporary society
  • Immigration and identity in Spain and Latin America
  • The future of work and automation

Writing task examples

  • Write a formal letter to a newspaper editor defending a position on reducing meat consumption
  • Write a report for your company recommending measures to improve employee well-being
  • Write an opinion article for a student magazine on the advantages and risks of artificial intelligence

Speaking scenario examples

  • Your city is debating whether to ban private cars from the city centre — discuss options and make a recommendation
  • You are on a committee deciding how to invest a grant in education — evaluate three proposals
  • Interpret a photograph showing elderly people using smartphones and discuss digital inclusion

Test Day Tips

  • Bring a valid photo ID and your exam admission letter to the test centre.
  • Arrive 20 minutes early — latecomers may not be admitted.
  • In Reading, read all questions before the passage to focus your reading.
  • In Listening, preview questions during instruction time and the pauses between recordings.
  • In Writing, plan before writing: 5 minutes on structure and key vocabulary.
  • In Speaking preparation, make concise bullet notes — not a full script.
  • During the Speaking test, if you do not understand a question, politely ask for clarification in Spanish.
Partial pass: If you fail one group (Comprehension or Expression), you receive an Apto Parcial and can retake only the failed group in a subsequent session within 24 months.
