The Academic Word List (AWL) for IELTS — 570 Word Families

306 word families covered · Sublists 1–10 · Definitions and IELTS examples · Band 7+ vocabulary

What Is the Academic Word List — and Why Does It Matter for IELTS?

The Academic Word List (AWL) was developed by Averil Coxhead at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and published in 2000. It contains 570 word families — groups of related words sharing a common root — that appear with high frequency across a wide range of academic disciplines. Coxhead analysed a 3.5-million-word corpus covering 28 subject areas across arts, commerce, law, and science to identify these words.

Why the AWL matters specifically for IELTS Academic: IELTS Academic Reading passages are drawn from authentic academic books, journals, and magazines — exactly the genres the AWL was built to cover. Research suggests that the AWL accounts for approximately 10% of all words in academic texts. Every word you learn from the AWL therefore has a direct and measurable impact on your ability to read IELTS passages fluently.

For Writing, IELTS examiners assess Lexical Resource — the range and accuracy of your vocabulary. Using AWL words correctly and precisely is one of the clearest signals to an examiner that you have the academic vocabulary expected at Band 7 and above. Equally important, the AWL is deliberately organised into 10 sublists by frequency, meaning you can prioritise your study: Sublists 1–3 are the highest-frequency and should be mastered first.

IELTS General Training candidates: The AWL is less directly relevant to Section 1 texts (notices, advertisements) but becomes increasingly important in Section 3, which uses texts similar in complexity to IELTS Academic. All candidates sitting IELTS for university admission should aim to master at least Sublists 1–5.

How to Study the AWL for IELTS

Start with Sublists 1–3

These 180+ word families are the highest frequency and will give you the greatest return on your study time. Every hour spent on Sublist 1 yields more IELTS benefit than an hour on Sublist 9.

Learn word families, not just headwords

For 'analyse', also learn: analysis, analyst, analytical, analytically. IELTS Reading tests you on all forms. Writing examiners reward grammatical accuracy in word choice — knowing the noun vs. verb form is essential.

Use words in context

After learning a new word, write two original IELTS-style sentences using it — one for Task 1 (describing data) and one for Task 2 (making an argument). Production builds stronger memory than recognition alone.

Read IELTS-level texts daily

Read articles from The Guardian, BBC News, The Economist, or New Scientist and highlight AWL words. Seeing words in authentic academic contexts builds deeper, more durable learning than flashcard study alone.

Focus on collocations

AWL words are most powerful when used in their natural collocations: 'conduct research', 'draw conclusions', 'adopt an approach'. See our Collocations page for the most important IELTS academic collocations.

Review with spaced repetition

Use Anki (free) to create flashcards for words you find difficult. Spaced repetition schedules reviews at optimal intervals — after 1 day, 3 days, 1 week — maximising long-term retention while minimising study time.
