Writing Overview
The MCAT is a 7.5-hour, 230-question exam administered by the AAMC. Four sections assess knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, psychology, sociology, and critical analysis skills. Scores range from 472 to 528 on a scaled composite of four 118โ132 section scores.
Note: MCAT does not have a dedicated writing section. This guide covers general test preparation.
High-Score Strategies
- 1.Build content knowledge first with a structured course (Kaplan, Princeton Review, or UWorld).
- 2.Do 500+ CARS passages specifically โ no shortcuts for this section.
- 3.Use AAMC official practice materials exclusively in the last month โ they're the most representative.
- 4.Review wrong answers deeply. Understand WHY each is wrong.
- 5.Sleep and exercise matter โ MCAT is an endurance test.
- 6.Take 5+ full-length practice tests, including 2โ3 AAMC ones.
