Overview
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the world's largest Japanese language proficiency test. N5โN1 scale (N5 = beginner, N1 = highest). N2 is the level most often required by Japanese employers and universities. No speaking component โ purely reading and listening.
Question Types
Grammar pattern selection
Choose the correct grammar ending or connector for a sentence.
Strategies
- โN2 grammar: ~170 patterns to learn. Focus on conditional (ใใฐใใใใใใใจ), purpose (ใใใใซใใใใใซ), and concessive (ใใฎใซใใใซใใใใใใ)
- โContext and formality level often discriminate between similar patterns
Sentence reordering (ไธฆใณๆฟใ)
Put four scrambled segments into the correct sentence order.
Strategies
- โFind the verb โ it goes at the end
- โLook for particles that indicate the grammatical role of each chunk
General Strategies
- 1.N2 requires ~1,000 kanji and ~6,000 vocabulary words โ use Anki with N2 decks.
- 2.Study grammar systematically with Kanzen Master N2 Grammar โ the most respected N2 resource.
- 3.Listening section: consume native content daily (NHK News, anime, podcasts) at natural speed.
- 4.For sentence reordering: identify the verb first, then attach the object using ใ, then the subject.
- 5.Take official past JLPT exams (available at jlpt.jp/e/samples/) for authentic practice.
